Liked it. I saw it only once before, a TV showing of the stage play. I love love musicals and love cats but it will never be one of my favorites. Which is not to say I didn't cry through Memory. I thought they did a great job with it, making humans look like cats, the sets and backdrops were gorgeous. I first read HDM when I was in middle school, and in preparation for the tv series I re-read it recently, over 15 years after the first reading. All images: Alex Cranz/Gizmodo In the years since its release, Apple TV has often lagged behind competitors, seemingly forgotten by Apple in favor of phones, computers, and even watches. And the Apple TVs status as the “other” on Apples list of sales feels evident when you notice how late to the 4K party it is. Roku launched a 4K box last year and Nvidia launched an Android-based one two years ago. Fortunately (for Apple fans) the Apple TV 4K is so polished it almost feels like it was worth the wait. But just to be clear, unless you are already deeply attached to the Apple ecosystem, and in particular the iTunes store, the Apple TV 4K is not worth the wait. Its very good at what it does—namely play back content in 4K with an expanded color gamut and HDR (it supports both HDR10 and Dolbyvision—the two competing HDR formats) but in the meantime, you could have had a very cheap Roku, or a pricey but more nimble Nvidia Shield. The Apple TV, at 180, is only a little cheaper than the 200 Nvidia Shield, which also does 4K and HDR and gaming. Only that device, because it runs Android TV, can also play Nintendo ROMs and stream Amazon Prime. So why on earth would one ever recommend the Apple TV? Because this thing does what Apple usually does best—it takes a finicky concept and boils it down into something a roommate, parent, or even that old college buddy with two kids, a full time job, and zero free time could use. tvOS has to be the most polished TV operating system Ive used, and even when Im faced with its limitations (no Amazon Prime until later this year) I dont find myself too bothered. Everything is so pretty and so easy to use that its hard to be annoyed. Typing in passwords is easy because I can just hold down the Siri button and spell them out, and while swiping on the remotes little touchpad to navigate menus feels weird at first, after a couple of hours of use you wont even notice (I certainly didnt. The remote is simple, and super easy to get familiar with, but the touch pad can take getting used to. Apple TV also has the absolute easiest method yet for finding good 4K HDR movies to watch. Im not talking about whatever Netflix airs on a whim—but movies that have just left the theater, like Wonder Woma n or Kong: Skull Island. Sony was the first to offer first run 4K HDR movies with its expensive Ultra HD Media Player. You could watch the latest Spider-Man or other Sony films as soon as they left theaters, but the box and movies were pricey and the navigation menus were ugly. There are exactly three ports on this simple box: Power, HDMI, and ethernet. Both Roku and Android have offered solutions since, but those solutions have been bad. The apps (usually Vudu, Amazon, or a combination of both) are unattractive, and thanks to poor labeling, youre never actually sure if the movie youre spending 10-20 on is actually in 4K and HDR. With the Apple TV, those movies are clearly labeled, and Apple promises that as movies already in its library are made available in 4K and HDR, the price for those flicks will remain the same, regardless of whether you bought it as an HD film initially or not. This makes upgrading your film library cheaper and easier than any other solution out there. Finding 4K HDR content is super easy, and the content is actually good? But theres is one big wildly irritating caveat. 4K HDR content tends to be big—too big for the 32GB to 64GB of storage available on an Apple TV. Not to mention the fact that at the moment, you can only stream 4K content from Apple. (Apple recommends a minimum download speed of 25 Mbps download speed for streaming 4K. So you have to stream these big gorgeous films, and if your internet is crummy, or you dont have a wired ethernet cable straight from the box to your router, you will be in for a world of frustration. After dropping 20 to watch Baby Driver on the Apple TV (Apple often makes films available for purchase while theyre still in theaters) I found myself less than impressed. The Apple TV was running off my wi-fi, but sitting in a less than ideal location, so the film stuttered and stopped and frequently downgraded the stream to 720p or worse. Once I plugged in an ethernet cord (I wasnt about to reconfigure the whole room for a better wi-fi signal next to the TV) I could see the stubble on the baby-faced lead of the film. Wonder Woman looked great too, and Sense8, Stranger Things, and Daredevil season 2, three Netflix shows shot in 4K and HDR, all looked as good an vibrant as they do on the Nvidia Shield. Since I sorted the internet issue the 4K Apple TV has had few issues. Its a solid device. If youre already invested in the iTunes store, dont want to mess with the potential fussiness of Android on the Nvidia Shield, or youre desperate to have very nice looking first run movies without dropping cash on a Blu-ray player, then the Apple TV 4K should be at the top of your list. It cant do as much as the Nvidia Shield, and it isnt as cheap as the Roku Ultra, but this little 180 box usually just works, and it looks great while it does it. README It plays back content at 4K with HDR when applicable. Finally. The menus and navigation are all intutive and handily the most attractive available. First run movies, and even films still in theater, can be had for 20 a pop, and theyll automatically upgrade to 4K HDR when available, with no additional cost. Definitely plan to string along an ethernet cable if you want to enjoy 4K content.

I am shaken and can't believe the horrors some girls have gone through in our society. It is one of the best movies of this year. Hats off to Rani Mukerji. She has given her heart and soul to the character of Shivani Shivaji Roy. The young actor who plays the villain is PHENOMENAL. Other actors also add life to their respective roles. The story keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout the film. Such films should be seen on big screen so that Indian producers come out with more such hard-hitting and thought-provoking films. Permalink 8 /10 Rani Mukerji & Vishal Jethwa SHOW Mardaani 2 Ever since I heard about Mardaani's sequel, I had great expectations coz of the only one lady, Rani Mukerji and i had some regrets that I missed Mardaani in theaters and decided to watch it in theaters on its first day. The cat and mouse game between the fierce cop Shivani Roy and a serial killer who loves to rape, torture and kills young girls. He is wild, cunning beastly and unpredictable behaviour with a dark past and is on run. Will Shivani succeeds in her mission forms the crux of the story. Well, the fast paced narration and the background score keeps you engaged in this gritty thriller. The performances of the lead and the sub characters were sumptuous. Once again, Rani didn't disappoint me, she has got the right attittude as the SP Shivani Roy and was very convincing. But the debutante Vishal Jethwa stole the whole show. He was absolutely magnificent. The character was well constructed might be inspired from Korean Serial Killer Movies. Gopi Puthren directorial debut didn't go in vain but his scripted demanded more justification of several scenes which will make us to think, How did he. Is it possible. Could have avoided those when compared to Mardaani which was very raw, unpredictable and more intense. Another plus point of the movie was there were no songs and John Stewart Eduri scored the background music of the movie and it took the movie to another level. Jishnu Bhattacharjee's camera was also an added advantage even though it was not challenging. Female empowerment / feminine speech (was good) delivered by Rani Mukerji which took around 5 minutes during the tension gripped scenes. Wrongly placed. Unlike the female cops portrayed in Bollywood thus far, the cop in Mardaani 2 is as real as real can be. Mardaani 2 grabs your attention from the commencement itself and never relents. Gopi Puthran's screenplay is replete with several intense episodes, which eventually make Mardaani 2 a good versus evil battle as the protagonist makes her way to the baddie behind the baddies. The stewing wrath of the protagonist is delineated convincingly while the director also incorporates ample emotional baggage that would cause you to associate with the on-screen characters. Seen in the present setting of the brutality against ladies in society in general and India in particular, a motion picture like Mardaani 2 couldn't have released at a superior time. While it may appear to glorify the brutality here and there, a hard-hitting motion picture like is the need of the hour. Mardaani 2 raises awareness of issues like the safety of women and the gender inequality that exists in society. It also motivates ladies to look within to trigger their very own bold soul. The very well-executed culmination is realistic to the core, like the rest of the film. In fact, director Gopi Puthran manages to keep you hooked for most parts, without ever getting formulaic. Also, his stance to sidetrack the soundtrack is indeed courageous and commendable. The customary audience, so used to the mandatory songs each 15/20 minutes, may whimper at first, but let's be honest, similar individuals likewise protest if songs wreck the story when the dramatization escalates. Also, director Puthran resorts to realistic brutality to enhance the overall impact. The background score (John Stewart Eduri) is perfect and never goes overboard. The DoP (Jishnu Bhattacharjee) depicts the gritty environs with striking visuals, closing in tight on the protagonist in dramatic moments. Rani Mukerji is evidently the best thing in the film. She is on a nailing spree. One cannot imagine this role without her. Portraying a true to life, forceful, aggressive and abusive cop with much-needed intensity, strength and dignity is no cakewalk but she slips into the skin of Shivani Shivaji Roy with elan. A virtuoso act, indeed! In a lesser entertainer's hands, the written material would not have been so ably conveyed. The film's antagonist Vishal Jethwa is a revelation. He's absolutely intimidating and menacing all through. In spite of being hollowed against a powerhouse entertainer like Rani, Vishal ensures he leaves an ineradicable impression, playing a cold-blooded criminal. Also, his rustic Rajasthani accent is bang on, just enough to add more menace. With a run time of just under 2 hours, Mardaani 2 is a barnstorming, shocking and outstanding film all in all. It might be a bit over the top at times but director Gopi Puthran keeps the scenes tight and tense through his terrific screenplay. The film acts like a sledgehammer. As the body count continues to mount in Rajasthan's education hub Kota, the remorseless young killer Sunny (Vishal Jethwa) challenges Shivani to stop him if she can. Rani Mukerji once again steals the show with her measured and restrained act. She doesn't go over-the-top with theatrics but captures the nuances required to play a gritty top cop, dealing with heinous crimes, rape victims and a violent murderer. She does a fine balancing act between being powerful and vulnerable at the same time. The film's antagonist Vishal Jethwa is a revelation and holds his own confidently against a powerhouse performer like Rani. He looks innocent, but delivers quite a chilling performance for a debutant. He gets the rustic Rajasthani accent right, just enough to add more menace. The film's pace is relentless and adds to the thrill even as we see the villain constantly (and quite unbelievably) outsmarting the cops. The first and the second half are equally engaging, with no songs to interrupt the proceedings. Thankfully, the background score is subtle too. The film's writing repeatedly hammers the point of gender inequality and bias. The director gives us glimpses into Sunny's troubled past, but also gives his character way too many smarts, making some of it seem unrealistic. What also doesn't help is him breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience. The film tends to stereotype its male characters, portraying almost all of them as misogynistic and insensitive towards the plight of women. However, it's the conviction in the performances and a gripping narrative that ensure there's never a dull moment in Mardaani 2. Yes, it is a brutal story that's sometimes hard to stomach, but it needs to be told. And none better than Rani in a khakee to lead the show. Simply Awesome Not a single second is unworthy. In 2014 Badaun gang rape case sent panick waves across the country where two Dalit girls were gang raped continuously for two days, murdered and hung from a tree. In 2019, a female doctor was abducted from a toll plaza near Hyderabad raped and later her body was burnt. These few incidents have rocked the entire nation with widespread protest since government came under pressure, highlighted by media and I am just talking few here... there are have been innumerable rape cases which have even gone unreported. We always wonder what goes into the mind of a rapist and this where Mardaani 2 comes into play. Mardaani 2 is a cat-and-mouse game where a ruthless rapist and killer challenges Shivani Shivaji Roy to catch him after every murder and even gives her the clue on his next move From the writer of Mardaani, Gopi Puhtran takes the director's seat this time. Like Mardaani which focussed on the drug racket and child trafficking, Mardaani 2 tells the true story of rape incidents which is very much existing in India. Hats off to him for creating niche drama with well-written screenplay that will keep glued on to the screen till the end. Cinematography is just about okay. Art direction is natural. Background score is bad which could have been better Writing was definitely better but I felt the character of Rani Mukerji was somehow always proactive in reading criminal's mind. Nor does it intend to become one. It is in many ways a realistic portrayal of how women or girls are still treated in our society- be she an IPS officer or a college goer. In no single shot, the director wants the protagonist to become a larger than life character and there lies the victory of the movie. However, as you expect, peoples respect for this movie has been subdued. Had this character been played by Akshay INDIA Kumar or Ajay Devgan or Ranbeer Singh, it would have been surely a blockbuster. Does not matter much, though. For us who crave for good Hindi movies, the second installment of the franchise brings fresh breeze, new rays hope. Rani Mukherjee is restrained in the lead role and her portrayal of the vulnerability even a female cop faces in her field of work lifts the spirit of the movie. In certain scenes, she is just unbeatable. Vishal Jethwa as the cold blooded killer and rapist just steals the show. He makes his character so believable that you actually start hating the character. All other characters do justice to their roles, however minute they are. Gopi Puthran creates a one of its kind Hindi serial killer movie with a brilliant panache. The way he restricts the emotional outflow of the movie deserves special mention. This is a must watch if you want a fresh breath amidst the mediocrity of the Hindi movies around. I wish that a punishment brutal than death penalty should be given to the rapists. A fast paced Social thriller with no dull moment Amazing performance by the main antagonist. Very fast paced, superb editing with no dull moments. In the end, when, of course, the villain gets nabbed, one does feel the desire to continue hitting him as much as possible, which can only be made possible by the amount of hate the actor has been able to get from audience through his amazing acting. One doesn't feel a bit of sorry when he gets beaten publicly. Specially, there are no songs to divert your mood and the anger one develops for the antagonist. Rani Mukherjee was superb too and was able to portray the bias and hardship which even an officer may feel when still trying the make it accustomed to reporting to female boss. A legendary example of watching for yourself to see the truth. Rani Mukherjee is strong, beautiful, and intelligent actress. A serious/action movie staring a female is rare, only Rani, Kangana and KaiKai Menon could carry it off, but in this film I cannot imagine any other actress doing it better. Rani was very tough and she made the story believable. I really hope Rani get recognized for the role she played. The suspense and thriller was absolutely incredible in this film as well. I do wonder however was this in anyway based on a true story because it was real intense. I would highly recommend this film to any SUSPENSE/THRILLER loving fan. 3 out of 4 found this helpful. The film is directed by Disney veteran Lino DiSalvo, in his directorial debut, written by Blaise Hemingway, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, and produced by On Animation Studios. The film stars the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor and Daniel Radcliffe. The film follows a girl named Marla who tries to save her brother from a Playmobil world the two are sucked into, and becomes involved in the midst of a population-capturing scheme by Emperor Maximus. Premiering as the opener of the June 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Playmobil: The Movie began theatrical runs in France on 7 August 2019 by Pathé, in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2019 by StudioCanal, and in the United States on 6 December 2019 by STXfilms. Playmobil: The Movie was panned by critics for being a perceived feature-length advertisement; most criticism was of the poor storytelling, generic songs, and worldbuilding problems, with several negative comparisons to The Lego Movie. It was also a box-office bomb, grossing 15 million on a 40 million budget, and in the United States had the worst opening weekend ever for a film playing in over 2, 300 theaters. [6] Plot [ edit] Marla is a formerly free-spirited girl who has grown up to be responsible yet overprotective in order to care for her brother Charlie, who has grown lonely and disconnected from her after the death of their parents. One night, Charlie sneaks out to visit a toy museum with a Playmobil exhibit. After Marla arrives and scolds Charlie for running away, a lighthouse illuminates them and transports them to the Playmobil world. Marla and Charlie find themselves in the middle of a Viking battle, and Charlie helps them until he is kidnapped by some pirates. Frantic to find her brother, Marla goes to the nearest town hoping to ask for help, and runs into Del, the driver of a food truck whose client refuses to pay him over pink hay that causes the town's horses to sprout wings. As Marla tries to form a posse to find Charlie, Del gets her out of trouble when she shows Viking gold to the whole town, and agrees to help Marla find her brother in exchange for the gold. Marla and Del run into Rex Dasher, a secret agent and an old friend of Del. Rex explains that a number of characters have disappeared, and the group sneaks into a villainous spy headquarters to find information about the disappearances. Despite some issues, they successfully gather the data and escape, but Rex is later captured by the pirates. He is taken away to Constantinopolis and finds Charlie, who had been locked up with other characters by Emperor Maximus, who intends to have the prisoners fight to their deaths. Rex tells Charlie that Marla had been looking for him, which encourages Charlie to break away. However, he later allows himself to be recaptured so the other characters could escape. Del recognizes that a device used by the pirates belongs to Glinara, an alien crime lord. After meeting with her in exchange for information, Del offers to pay twice as much as he owes her. Glinara agrees and reveals that she sold the device to Maximus. However, Del is unable to uphold his end of the bargain, as Marla only had two pieces of gold left. Angered, Glinara captures them and attempts to drop them into a portal, but they are spared by Glinara's robot servant Robotitron, who hacks the portal and drops the group into a forest. Del leaves the group, upset by Marla's deception. Marla and Robotitron get lost in the forest until Marla accidentally hits a fairy godmother, who encourages her to continue her search and sends her to Constantinopolis. Arriving at the city, Marla reaches a coliseum where Charlie is about to fight a Tyrannosaurus rex. Charlie and Marla work together to fight off the T-Rex, but to no avail. Del soon arrives with his food truck, and Marla uses the last of Del's pink hay to turn the T-Rex harmless. An enraged Maximus orders his guards to arrest them, but the guards reveal themselves to be Rex and the missing warriors, who then lock Maximus inside a cage. As everyone celebrates their victory, Marla and Charlie use the T-Rex to fly back to the lighthouse and return to the real world, where it is revealed that they were missing for only five minutes. On good terms, Marla promises to Charlie that their relationship will be mended. In a mid-credit scene, one of the security guards finds a figure of Maximus on the floor next to a cage. As he places him on top of Mount Olympus, Maximus's laugh is heard. Cast [ edit] Anya Taylor-Joy as Marla Brenner. Charlie's sister, who also voices Marla's Playmobil form. While normally reluctant to play spy roles in films, Radcliffe accepted the part of Dasher because "there is something incredibly fun about playing an unbelievably confident, kind of to the point of being an oblivious, person who is constantly undercut by other characters who make him realise that maybe he's not as smooth as he thinks he. 9] As he explained on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Rex Dasher is a Playmobil version of James Bond. There's a ridiculous thing that will sound suitably ridiculous to your listeners, because they know that it would be ridiculous for me to play James Bond in real life. But because I have an English accent I go to America, a lot of people think and say something to the effect of, You should be James Bond. And I say, No, you're wrong. So the chance to play Playmobil James Bond was like, That seems a little more my speed. 10] On an April 2019 airing of The Graham Norton Show, Radcliffe displayed a figure of Dasher that was sent to him by the director. Heavily playing with Playmobil figures as a kid, Lambert stated that enjoyed playing the part: He's an obnoxious, ridiculous, comical bad guy. He's got like Napoleon complex, he's incredibly narcissistic. He loves the sound of his own voice. He's spoiled. He's a brat. And he usually gets his way. 12] He explained that he played the character as himself "on a really bad day. and said performing the musical number was his favorite part of working on Playmobil. [16] Spike Spencer [17] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] An animated feature film based on Playmobil figurines, produced by On Entertainment, Wild Bunch and Pathé, was announced in November 2014 and originally expected to be released at the end of 2017. [18] The film originally involved Bob Persichetti as director and screenwriter. The film would be the first in a trilogy of theatrical animated films based on Playmobil. Persichetti initially pitched the film to Sony Pictures Animation. Although Sony tried to buy the pitch, it fell through. He was eventually offered instead to direct the 2018 superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. [19] The film was animated in On Animation's Canadian facilities. The film was also originally supposed to be distributed by Cross Creek Pictures. [20] ON Animation's producers acquired the rights for the film circa January 2016. [21] On 9 February 2016, Lino DiSalvo came on board to direct the 75 million budgeted film, replacing Persichetti. Dimitri Rassam and Aton Soumache of On Animation Studios produced the film. It marks DiSalvo's directorial debut after spending 17 years at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Alexis Vonarb, Axel Von Maydell, and Moritz Borman also produced the film. [24] Maydell was first associated with the Playmobil brand fifteen years before the film's release, when he was involved in producing interactive games for the company. [28] In October 2018, lead voice cast was announced which included Anya Taylor-Joy, Gabriel Bateman, Daniel Radcliffe, Jim Gaffigan, Meghan Trainor, and Adam Lambert, while Trainor and Lambert would also write and sing original songs for the film. [29] Writing [ edit] DiSalvo instantly got to work on animatics following Open Road's acquisition, completing five animatics in Los Angeles in Montreal before work on the assets began. [21] The first 15 months of the film's production was spent in Los Angeles, with a crew of ten people. When the project moved to Montreal, 300 people ( more than half of the animation crew at a typical Disney movie" were involved. [21] Both DiSalvo and Hemingway, long-time friends, re-watched their favorite 1980s films like E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) in writing Playmobil; Hemingway explained that both the movie and the old-school films they referenced knew "how to find what is magical in the most mundane situations. 30] The producers wanted to capture a child's emotion of playing with toys with Playmobil, 25] which meant DiSolvo had to research. He interviewed more than 200 fans of Playmobil from across the globe, 31] finding that the toy series was mostly enjoyed for its role play element, where "they dont tell you who the hero is — the player defines who the hero is. 21] Thus, he went for a role-playing vibe in writing the film's story. [21] DiSalvo also revisited his childhood home to look at the toys he played with as a kid. [32] The German Playmobil company also sent every Playmobil set ever released to the Los Angeles development location, and the writers used them to conceive characters. A food truck and a figure wearing a Hawaiian shirt, for instance, led to the creation of Del. [31] Initially, the writers planned Playmobil: The Movie to start with either a shot of an opening storybook or a narration, similar to most fairy tale movies. These ideas were rejected due to not being "organic" enough for the overall product. [21] They finally chose to have opening and closing live-action sequences: Marla, has lost touch with the childs point of view that she used to have. It felt right to show her in a live-action world where there is no magic. When she finds herself in a very magical situation — which is the entrance to the world of Playmobil, it becomes the catalyst for the whole movie. 21] Animation [ edit] Playmobil: The Movie was animated with Autodesk Maya. [33] Julien Bocabeille supervised the film's animation team that consisted of 56 animators. [34] Being that Playmobil: the Movie was a story about wish fulfillment, the scale was one of the biggest priorities. According to production designer Rémi Salmon: We see those toys from a kid's eyes, not what he has in front of him but what he imagines. The pirate in his hand has a stiff plastic cape, but when he plays, he sees the cape floating in the wind. 21] The animators' biggest challenges came in the set designs and character animation. [34] While each Playmobil universe varied in tone and lighting due to their differing styles, they had to have some consistences with the Playmobil world. [34] The Fifth Element and the works of J. J. Abrams were influences in designing the city of Glinara. [35] Having "a touch of richness and life" in the film's Playmobil world depended on not just the lighting being "pushed pretty far in a very cinematographic way; but also the characters, particularly their movements and textures. [21] While not entirely animated like humans and having plastic hair and skin, the toys were given "a 20 percent freedom to bend and stretch" and wrote actually cloth-made attire for close-up shots. [21] The animators had to work with limits that came with moving the Playmobil figures, especially when it came to animating faces. The faces are 2D shapes imposed onto 3D heads, meaning that big parts of how human faces are expressed (cheekbones, nose and jaws) are not present. [34] Coming up with a convenient workflow for animating 2D faces on 3D objects was another challenge, which Jeremy Ringard and Claude Levastre was responsible for. They first came up with the idea of modeling and rigging the features as 3D shapes, but this lead to problems of Z-fighting, intersection and "floating" appearances in close-up shots. [36] They then thought of a "texture flipbook" where the animators chose from a set of facial features in order to keep the look of the movie consistent; however, they figured that it would disallow any variations to the expressions and be very expensive due to the amount of storage, texture resolution and file management involved. [33] Finally, they came up with a system where the animators used 3D-rig-controlled 2D shapes that were converted as a dynamic texture applied on the 3D head in the viewport, and the animation would be rendered real-time through a shader free of resolution or sampling restrictions. [33] The car Dasher drives is a Porsche Mission E, the 2015 concept version of the Porsche Taycan; Playmobil is the Porsche's first appearance in a major film, and a remote-controlled Mission E toy was released as a movie tie-in. When we started to talk about moving from one genre to another, we ended up like kids playing with their Playmobil in the living room! — Playmobil producer Tito Ortiz [38] According to DiSolvo, the moral of Playmobil: The Movie is, The only rules that matter are the ones you set. 39] As Nick Hasted of The Arts Desk categorized Playmobil, its a breezy B-movie in a genre aspiring to Mad comic satire and grand opera; with a "unpretentious good nature" a la 1980s and 1990s after-school specials. [40] Due to Playmobil being set in a world filled with different universes, the film caricaturizes and plays with the tropes of several genres, including western films, fantasy, science fiction, and musicals. [32] In acknowledging inevitable comparisons to The Lego Movie, DiSalvo claimed, The movie Lego relied a lot on comedy and wasn't so much driven by characters, while our film will follow more the Disney tradition of storytelling and is meant to appeal to girls as much as boys. 28] According to Tito Ortiz, Playmobil is about the importance of forgiveness, tolerance, and unity in broken families. [49] Playmobil: The Movie had its first trailer released on 16 December 2018, with a release date set for 16 August 2019. [42] The second trailer was unleashed on 23 July 2019, the release date changed to 22 November. [50] 51] Each trailer present a different premise: the first presented the film as focusing on Marla trying to save his brother in a Playmobil. And while this may seem like a cynical cash-grab, many people felt the same way before the first LEGO Movie came out, until the final results proved to be surprisingly enjoyable. One has to wonder if a connection to human kids will also be present in this movie as The LEGO Movie and Toy Story do. However, with the awareness that the film was trying to capitalize on the fame of The Lego Movie, she also had skepticism toward its success due to the weak box office of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. [56] According to Geekspin, a few people already have a hunch that the Playmobil movie will flop at the box office. due to the superior popularity of Legos over Playmobil, and the film's lack of intellectual properties, and star power. [57] Playmobil: The Movie was released in France by Pathé on 7 August 2019, on 610 screens, and was released in the USA by STX Entertainment on 6 December 2019. It was originally scheduled to be released in the United States by Open Road Films on 18 January 2019, 24] which was later delayed to 19 April 2019, 58] Due to the bankruptcy of Global Road, STX bought the U. S. distribution rights to the film in early April 2019, 59] and set the U. release date to 30 August 2019. On 5 August 2019, STX pushed the U. release date back once more to 6 December 2019, among other schedule changes of other films from STX that reportedly happened due to STX having limited cash flow, and wanting to pull their resources in to support Hustlers, although STX has denied that this was the case.
